Viva Roundabout - Florianópolis, the Brazilian Magic Island

People often ask us where to go in Latin America, so we decided to launch Viva Roundabout! A quick way to keep you posted about the best destinations no matter what type of traveller you are! The city, fun, food and stay are the four key topics we will always address in each edition.

Our first post will be a walk through of the beautiful city of FLORIANÓPOLIS!

THE CITY

Florianópolis is the capital of Santa Catarina. The island has a population of less than 600,000 and may reach up to 2 million during summer! With 42 registered beaches, and dozens more known to locals, the city is known for having a beautiful population and being gay friendly; so don't be shy if you are LGBT, the atmosphere is inviting and people are very open-minded!

FOOD

Kilo restaurants are famous in Brazil and you will find one anywhere on the island; prices vary and the most famous dishes are sea food related. A must try is Moqueca and the oysters bred in the farms that surround Floripa.

If you like seafood, go to the restaurants in Costa da Lagoa (access by walk or boat only), Ribeirão da Ilha e watch the sunset while having your meal at Santo Antônio de Lisboa.

FUN

Now that you know where to watch the sunset, make sure you check out the sunshine at Praia Mole beach, located close to Lagoa da Conceição; it is the place to be if you are after a huge range of entertainment options and sport activities. The lake offers kite, wake, fly and paddle board lessons as well as windsurfing and many others! Surf schools are located in the surrounding beaches.

Night Clubs can be found not only in Lagoa da Conceição but also in Jurerê Internacional and Centro. Floripa is famous for its active nightlife during summer and beautiful people.

Surfers and beach lovers make sure you go to Joaquina, Praia Mole, Jurerê Internacional, Praia Brava, Barra da Lagoa.

STAY

Lagoa da Conceição (from budget to premium) has the biggest concentration of hostels and backpackers. If you enjoy the crowd and want a busier environment then definitely spend some time at Canasvieiras (budget), Ingleses (budget) and Jurerê Internacional (premium).

Make sure you like us on Facebook for more Viva Roundabout posts and don't forget to share your experiences if you have been to Floripa, or feel free to ask questions if you are planning to go there!

Tchau for now!
